It's Like Being A Kid Again! Three Wheel Scooters Are Here!
If you are considering purchasing a motorized scooter - either for yourself or a family member - you might want to look into buying a three wheel scooter. While many mobility scooters are the four-wheeled type, three wheel scooters are rapidly gaining in popularity. But, before we talk about the number of wheels on a scooter, we need to discuss some facts about the SIZE of the wheels.
In general, the size of the wheels on a scooter affects it performance - its ability to go up and over rough or hilly terrain. The wheel size also affects the stability of the scooter. In general, the three wheel scooter with larger wheels will be more stable, less liable to tip over - and will be better able to navigate curbs and rough outdoor terrain, than a three wheel scooter with smaller or narrower wheels.
Three Wheel Scooters vs. Four Wheel Scooters -- Performance Comparisons
As you might expect, three wheel scooters are not quite as stable as their four wheeled cousins - especially when climbing uphill or when making sharp turns. That extra wheel on the four wheel scooter can really help a lot! However, there is a tradeoff here: three wheel scooters, because they lack that extra wheel in the front, have a smaller turning radius. This means that in some situations - such as in navigating narrow doorways and small hallways, or turning in tight situations, the three wheel scooter may be easier to use. Because three wheel scooters are better able to handle smaller turning areas, these models are ideal for indoor (at-home) use. If you will only need your scooter for use in your home, and do not expect to travel with it, then a three wheel scooter may suit you just fine. On the other hand, if you will need to use your scooter outdoors a lot (such as daily/weekly travel to a doctor, employer, to church, etc.), then you may need the four wheel scooter in order to climb up ramps and curb cuts, handle potholes and cracks in sidewalks, as well as wet or slippery surfaces. Large Feet? Large Legs? Three Wheel Scooters To The Rescue! There is an additional advantage to having (and using) a three wheel scooter: extra leg and feet room. Why is this so? Because in a traditional four wheel scooter, you need to have an axle that transverses (crosses) the platform. You usually can't put your feet on or over it, which can make it very uncomfortable if you have long legs or large feet -- take it from me, I have size 13 shoes on right this minute. But with a three wheel scooter, the wheel is located in the center of the platform, allowing for the placement of your feet and legs to either side of the wheel/steering bar assembly. All of this means that if you want to relax and stretch out your feet, you can definitely do so if you own a three wheel scooter. Hooray for us big and tall guys! I hope you have enjoyed this short article on the advantages and disadvantages of the three wheel scooter -- I'll see you on the road!
