Motor Scooter Reviews -- What You Need To Know BEFORE You Make The Purchase

Motor Scooter Reviews

Presented here is our attempt at motor scooter reviews: Tips and information that we believe will be helpful to you as you evaluate various models and manufacturers of mobility scooters.

Let's Begin At The Foundation

In this motor scooter review we will begin with the ground floor, so to speak, of all mobility scooters - their platform. This is the base upon which your seat is attached, as well as providing storage for your battery. Many motor scooter reviews will not discuss this, so we point it out for you: make sure that the platform on the scooter you are planning to purchase has enough room for your legs and feet, especially. If your mobility scooter does not have a large enough platform, you will feel cramped and uncomfortable sitting in your scooter - especially for long periods.

Tires, Tires, Tires

Another area sometimes not adequately covered in many motor scooter reviews is the tires. You can purchase tires that are inflatable, solid rubber tires, or self-sealing, puncture-resistant tires. The inflatable tires are lighter, and provide some cushioning when traveling over bumps in the road - but they can puncture. The hard rubber tires cannot be punctured, of course -- but they weigh a lot more, and can give you less cushioning when you ride. In this motor scooter review we will recommend the self-sealing, puncture-resistant type: they are inflatable, but provide protection against punctures.

What Drives Your Scooter?

In this motor scooter review let us mention something else: The 'drive train' of scooters can vary greatly. Some mobility scooters are powered from the front wheel. The front wheel drive scooter is something that you will usually find on the smaller type of scooter used indoors. Any motor scooter review will tell you that a front wheel drive scooter does not have as much pulling power, so the load capacity of these types is smaller than those scooters powered from the rear wheels. As some motor scooter reviews will tell you, front wheel drive scooters may not have as large of a driving range, and usually do not travel at the same speeds, as rear wheel drive scooters.

Most motor scooter reviews will tell you that scooters with a rear wheel drive give you better traction. This is because the battery, the motor and you (the rider) are all in the back, and that all that weight allows the wheels to really 'dig in' to the terrain. We will tell you this in our motor scooter review - when you combine the increased traction capability with the more powerful motor used on a scooter with rear wheel drive, you have a unit that is MUCH better at climbing hills. It is usually true that scooters which are powered from the back wheels can go faster and further without recharging the batteries, and also have a greater load capacity than the front wheel drive mobility scooter.
